Many webmasters or website owners just keep on putting efforts into search engine optimization. They overlook an important part of SEO, which is over optimization. If you over optimize your web pages, chances are your website rankings might drop because your site has been designed specially for search engines and not for human being.
For example, if you build an web page and put lots of keywords inside the web page, it is good from the search engines point of view. But what will you think if you visit such web page? Very bad impression, right?
How Can Google Find Out A Website Is Over Optimized?
From what I understand, Google has an algorithm to detect over optimized web pages. Google never reviews what are the elements that are included in the over optimization detection algorithm. The detected websites are penalized heavily in the Google search results. Usually those websites are downranked 950 positions which means web searchers never has a chance to visit your website.
Matt Cutts, the head of the Google’s anti-spam team has published a video in which he mentions about over optimization as a reason for ranking problems.
How To Avoid Over Optimization?
There is no specific rules or tools that you can use to tell whether your websites are over optimized and penalized by Google. But there are a few points that you can take note to prevent any over optimization.
#1 Don’t Follow All SEO Experts
There are many SEO experts telling do this and do that. What I suggest you is don’t just follow what they says blindly. Some experts say you should have this element and others say you should have another element on your web pages. If you follow the advice of all these experts then it’s likely you will face over optimization problem. Think and understand about the result first before you apply those SEO advice.
#2 Don’t Include Too Many Keywords And Internal Links
Over the years, I have seen some of the websites include many internal links and keywords on just 1 web page. This is certainly not a good idea and it makes Google hard to follow all of your internal links if you have hundreds of them. Additionally it also makes search engines have the feeling that you are trying to fool the search engines. As a human being, we also get lost if we see so many links or URL on a web page.
#3 Building Inbound Links Naturally
Inbound links or external links are good if you would like to rank higher in Google search results. But you should build your inbound links naturally if you are implementing aggressive link building strategy. For example, if you have a new site and you try to get 100 links pointing to your web page in just 1 day, then Google might put you in the suspicious list. From search engines view point, it is very hard to get 100 links overnight if you are a new site.
Instead of getting 100 inbound links overnight, I suggest that you can get 10 inbound links per day and make it looks naturally. If you follow this way, you will see that Google will reward you by promoting your ranking on the way up to the top of the search results.
Conclusion
Over optimizing your web pages can heavily harm your website rankings on Google and other major search engines. Try to think more and don’t just follow all the suggestions from SEO experts.
