New Ultimate Ping List

in Blogging Tips, WordPress

Since I started this blog, I always intend to have a comprehensive list of ping server. Usually I could find those list on the web but are made up with copy and paste or outdated. I’m not satisfied with those list, so I did my own research and come out with my own list. I’m not going to provide biggest list but I’m going to show the userful list.

What Is Ping?

It’s necessary to notify service providers such as search engines, blog directories and etc upon publishing a new blog post. This notification action is called ping. Once notified, the ping service providers will send a bot or crawler to read your feed within seconds or minutes depending on their traffic.

The good thing about pinging is the more you ping, the more exposure you’ll gain for your blog post. Many of the ping service providers will get your feeds listed on their service or republished them. Of course the more you ping, the slower is your server. Usually I’ll just include those major and important ping service in my list. It’s up to your decision, you don’t need to follow the size of my list.

There’re different kinds of ping, e.g. blog ping, podcast ping, audio ping, video ping, social network ping and etc. This blog post is focusing on blog ping. By default, WordPress engine pings pingomatic automatically when you publish a new blog post. Simply because it’s outdated.

Multi-Ping Service

There are some ping service providers not only receive your ping and update their service according to your feeds, but also serve as a ping client to other ping services. Popular multi-ping service are ping-o-matic, pingoat, autopinger, Feedshark and FeedBurner’s Pingshot.

Out of this multi-ping list, I’d only recommend Pingshot from FeedBurner. Although I recommend it, but I do not include it in my ping list below. The reason is by creating our own ping list instead of depending on multi-ping service, I will have better control about pinging like who to ping and when to ping.

How To Prepare Your Ping List?

There are a few things need to take note during the preparation of your own ping list. And this is an on-going event, not an one-time kind of thing. You need to make sure the list is relevant to you and working all the time.

#1 Get A Base List

You are always welcome to get my list as the base. But if you’re hardworking enough, you can do some research on the internet to get other list and combine with my version.

#2 Add New Ping Service

My list isn’t the final. Just go to Google and do some research based on niche, language, and country. You may find some more ping service providers to be added to the list. You can skip this step if you don’t have any new service to add.

#3 Remove Unwanted And Non-Working Service

This is very important step. Check out the site one-by-one by visiting their website. If you found that the website is not working or shutting down, you can simply remove it from your list. If you’re using my list without modification, you can skip this step too.

#4 Update WordPress With Your Ping List

Almost done, now just go to WordPress and save your list. Done!!

#4 Maintenance

Done? Not really, I recommend that you come back to your list regularly and check one-by-one if they’re working. Remove those inactive ping service from your list if you find so.

I already said Bey is a webmaster.

Info for starters :

Ping = Packet InterNet Groper

If you are logged in, you can click on the “ping” link in your login menu and see links to all the posts you have made or to posts that people have made in answer to your posts. That gives you a handy way of finding your past posts or knowing when someone answers you. Unlike some other forums, nothing comes to your email box, you just have to keep checking your ping list.

Another use for pings is that it is a way for FReepers to point out good articles or posts to friends. A FReeper can amass a “ping list” or a list of other FReepers who have asked to be on their list…. then when they want to announce something or point to something, they do a post to all the names on their “ping list”. That post will then show up in your pings if you are on the list because someone has put your name on the post. Many ping lists are set up by subject matter…. for instance you can be on a “UFO ping list” , the FReeper who has that list will alert you to posts about UFOs.
