7 Top WordPress SEO Plugin To Boost Blog Traffic

Here is the list of 7 top WordPress SEO plugin which will resolve your SEO issue and boost your blog traffic!

Redirection

Redirection is a WordPress plugin to manage 301 redirections, keep track of 404 errors, and generally tidy up any loose ends your site may have. This is particularly useful if you are migrating pages from an old website, or are changing the directory of your WordPress installation.

My Opinion: 301 redirects are used to permanently move a site to a new location. Search engines do not apply penalties to 301 redirects the way they apply them to many other types of redirects. Usually when we do 301 redirects, we need to create .htaccess file and add the rule inside the file. This plugin simplify the process and let us define the rule very easily without any knowledge on .htaccess.

Robots Meta

There’s no easy way to add meta robots tags to WordPress pages, unless of course, when you install this plugin. This plugin makes it possible (and very easy) to:

  • Prevent indexing of your search result pages, while still allowing the search engines to follow the links on them, by adding noindex, follow robots meta tags.
  • Disallow indexing of subpages to your homepage, category pages, author pages and tag pages, to prevent duplicate content.
  • Prevent indexing of your login, register and admin pages by adding noindex robots meta tags.
  • Add noodp an noydir meta robots tags, allowing you to opt out of DMOZ and Yahoo! Directory descriptions.
  • Prevent Yahoo! and Google from indexing your feeds by adSmding a meta tag to their head-section.
  • Prevent indexing of just your comment feeds.
  • Disable author and date-based archives.
  • Nofollow category listings on single pages and posts to prevent PageRank leakage.
  • Nofollow your login, register and admin links, because they really don’t need PageRank.
  • Enforce a trailing slash on archives.
  • Edit your .htaccess and your robots.txt from within WordPress.
  • Assign robots meta tags to individual posts & pages.
  • Verify your site with Google Webmaster Tools and Yahoo! Site Explorer.
  • Add noarchive tags to your blog (Thanks to Henryk Gerlach).

My Opinion: This is a excellent plugin to resolve search engines indexing issue by adding meta robots tags to each post and page.

SEO Smart Links

SEO Smart Links provides automatic SEO benefits for your site in addition to custom keyword lists, nofollow and much more. SEO Smart Links can automatically link keywords and phrases in your posts and comments with corresponding posts, pages, categories and tags on your blog. Further SEO Smart links allows you to set up your own keywords and set of matching URLs. Finally SEO Smart links allows you to set nofollow attribute and open links in new window. Everything happens completely transparent, and you can edit the options from the administration settings panel.

My Opinion: Search engines such as Google like strong internal linking. With this plugin, you no need to create many internal links manually, it will do it for you automatically.

Permalinks Moved Permanently

If you just migrated your Wordpress blog from one permalink structure to another, and you don’t want to lose Pagerank or traffic that accesses your blog through the old permalinks, this is for you. Right before the old permalink generates a 404, this simple plugin grabs the slug from the end of the request and checks if there’s a post with this slug living somewhere else on your blog. If so, it will generate a “301 Moved Permanently” error, which automatically forwards your visitor (and Googlebot) to the new location of your post. It’s simple, but effective. No configuration options, just plug and play.

My Opinion: Although I’m not using this plugin right now but I’d like to recommend this plugin for those of you planning to change permalinks.

Google Sitemap Generator

This plugin will create a Google sitemaps compliant XML-Sitemap of your WordPress blog. It supports all of the WordPress generated pages as well as custom ones. Everytime you edit or create a post, your sitemap is updated and all major search engines that support the sitemap protocol, like ASK.com, Google, MSN Search and YAHOO, are notified about the update.

My Opinion: Beside generating XML sitemap and wait for search engines to crawl, it will submit the sitemap to search engines upon adding new blog post.

Broken Link Checker

Checks your posts for broken links and missing images and notifies you on the dashboard if any are found. Link checking intervals can be configured.

My Opinion: When the number of blog post increasing significantly, checking of broken link become an impossible task. Sometimes the URL or website you’re linking is out of service, with the help of this plugin, you can easily identify the problem and update/remove the link quickly.

HeadSpace2

HeadSpace is a powerful all-in-one plugin to manage meta-data and handle a wide range of SEO tasks. With it you can tag your posts, create custom titles and descriptions that improve your page ranking, change the theme or run disabled plugins on specific pages, and a whole lot more.

HeadSpace is modular in nature and provides a full set of modules that allow you to configure your site exactly as you want and without requiring several conflicting plugins – everything is contained within one consistent interface. These modules include:

Page-specific modules that can be applied to posts, pages, categories, archives, search pages, 404 pages, and the home page:

  • Page titles – SEO optimized titles
  • Tags and keywords are auto-suggested using a smart algorithm or via Yahoo and work on both posts and pages (pages can also be set to appear in tag archives)
  • Page-specific plugins – have plugins that run only on specific pages!
  • Theme-specific plugins – change your site theme on specific pages!
  • Description – what appears in search engine listing
  • More text – change the ‘more text’ for each post
  • JavaScript & CSS – add JavaScript or CSS files to a post
  • No index – configure whether a page is indexed by search engines
  • Site name & description
  • RSS name & description
  • Anything else you want – HeadSpace allows custom meta-data

Site-wide modules:

  • Configure auto-formatting (wpautop), auto-fancy quotes, auto-clickable links, and disable visual editing
  • Tracking codes for Google Analytics (new & old code), Crazy Egg, StatCounter, 103bees, Mint, FeedBurner Stats, Yahoo! Site Explorer, HitTail, Google Webmaster, Piwik, and Apture, with the ability to not track registered users
  • Google section targeting
  • First time visitor – display a special message to visitors when they first visit your site (based upon idea by Seth Godin)
  • Disable widgets
  • Change PHP memory limit, timeout, and error reporting level

My Opinion: You might be thinking where is All in One SEO Pack plugin, how much I do not include it? It’s because Headspace2 is directly competing against with All in One SEO Pack plugin and it has much more feature than the later. So I recommend to use Headspace2.

Thanks for posting. We just did an entry on seven steps towards optimizing Wordpress for search engines. It covered a lot of the same plugins.

Bey:

Terrific post. I particularly appreciated the Broken Link Checker plugin.

I have a weekly update of my List Of Blog Directories and after 47 weeks it is a big chore to go back and check for broken links.

Thanks a million.

Very nice list of plugins. I’m already using a few of them and just added the broken link checker. I did some permalink changes and really had lost track of updating my internal links as well as 301 redirection. Thanks!

agree with you Bey – except for sitemap generator…seems to me xml gens are a red herring for anything but a short-term fix, and can lead to innaccurate indexing. if you’re blog’s well coded, do you really think the xml gen is necessary?

Dagon Design Sitemap Generator is worth mentioning, providing a std sitemap that is useful for SEO.

And is that the WP Greet Box you’re using – that’s handy for boosting traffic.

Headspace especially is a cracker, beating All in One hands down.

Many tx.

Be careful when you use single-word keywords to pass internal link juice. You may end up with too many “unintended” internal links. This plug in is really cool and takes the pain out of manually linking across pages with the right anchor text. You just need to plan the “keyword, URL” pairs, which you must do when you “SEO” a site. Also, for the target URL use some variations of the keywords also, making sure you do get more links from the target keyword (say 75% from target keyword and 25% from keyword variants). This should get you better results
