In the eyes of search engines, old domain names or websites always have a big advantage over new domains or websites. As these domains has been around for several years, search engines tends to trust them more and give them better ranking on the search engines result pages.
If you own a new domain name or website, it will be much more difficult to compete with these established website, but nothing is impossible. Here are 3 effective tips that will help you to compete with established domains and outperform them.
Tip #1: Use Less Popular Versions Of Your Target Keywords
It’s nearly impossible to get high ranking for very competitive keywords. Sometimes we should not target those high competitive keywords as they’re not targeted enough. Give me some time, I’ll explain why below.
Assuming you’re creating a website, selling weight loss information or ebook. “weight loss” is no doubt the most popular keyword. You can use Good Keywords to do some analysis. This is a free tool. But you should not optimize your page for this keyword as it’s not very targeted at all. People searching for weight loss keyword might be just want to get the definition of weight loss.
What you can do is to optimize your web pages or website for those less search count keywords such as “weight loss ebook”. This is to avoid direct competition with those established domains and websites. It is much better to rank #1 and get less visitors for a slightly less popular keyword. But you might be enjoying much better conversion rate for your products and services.
Tip #2: Optimize Your Web Pages For As Many Keyword Variations As Possible
Since you’re now familiar with tip #1, you can repeat it to target and optimize your web pages with as many less popular keywords as possible. For example, you might use “effective way to lose weight”, “fast weight loss”, “lose weight naturally” and etc. Even if each keyword delivers only some visitors, but ultimately you will get many visitors with all keywords combined.
Another advantage of having high rankings for many of these long keywords is that your website becomes an authority website and relevant to a topic. The more high rankings your website has for long keywords that are relevant to a topic, the easier it gets to rank highly competitive keywords.
Those people searching for long tail keywords are more likely to buy something from you as they’re highly targeted.
Tip #3: Create Web Pages Just For Getting Inbound Links
There is an effective search engine optimization (SEO) strategy which is creating web pages on your websites to attract inbound links. The more inbound links your website get, the easier it gets to rank higher in search engines result pages.
My advice is to write some free information such as “how to” articles or free products about a relevant topic. These kind of web pages often get people to comment on it and generate inbound links. One of my free product, Twitter Badge (TwiBadge) WordPress plugin was created to achieve this kind of result. Another example is my last post which is “50 Greatest Twitter Tips & Twitter Secrets“.
I understand your main purpose is to generate revenue but creating web pages for getting inbound links will help to boost your income as you become authority websites.
Tip #4: Target Less Optimized Keywords
My last tip for you is to target those less optimized keywords. When you’re researching about less popular keywords, you should take a look how our competitors optimize those keywords. For example, are the targeted keywords appeared in their website title? Are they putting keywords into h1 or h2 tag or content page?
These are some of the on-page search engine optimization techniques you should look for it when you try to target less popular keywords. And this technique will ensure you have a better chance to success along your optimization journey.
Conclusion
My advice is to start from small and work your way up. You need to have some patient and no need to worry too much about established domains and websites as they started from small too. Once you become established domains or websites, then you’ve more weight to target those popular and competitive keywords.
